How to set up rotating proxies in ScrapeBox

Copy your Main gateway IP:PORTs, open the Proxy Manager, use Load from ClipBoard, tick Use Proxies, and set harvester connections to no more than a quarter of your plan’s threads for Google. Skip the built-in proxy test: it doesn’t work with our gateways. Test in a browser instead.

Updated October 2026SEO tools

ScrapeBox is a Windows SEO tool built around a search-engine harvester: you give it keywords and footprints, it queries Google, Bing and about 30 other engines, and it collects the result URLs. Around that sit a keyword scraper, a proxy manager and dozens of addons for checking links, metadata, indexing and more. It runs on Windows desktops and Windows servers alike.

Almost everything ScrapeBox does sends many queries to the same few sites, so it needs proxies. Without them, Google starts returning CAPTCHAs and empty pages within minutes. With a rotating gateway, each connection leaves from a different IP, so the load spreads over a large pool instead of a short list of static IPs that get burned one by one.

Most trouble with rotating proxies in ScrapeBox comes from habits formed with proxy lists: running the proxy test and deleting “failed” gateways, setting 100+ harvester connections against Google, and forgetting that addons running at the same time share the same threads. This guide walks through the setup and the settings that matter.

Which Storm plan fits

ScrapeBox is a search-engine harvester first, so rotating proxies on the Main gateway fit best: a new IP for each connection from a 700,000+ IP pool, with unlimited bandwidth. Because Google harvesting should use at most 25% of your threads, the 40-thread plan gives you 10 harvester connections and the 80-thread plan 20; pick the size by how fast you need results. Dedicated proxies suit lighter, non-Google tasks where a fixed IP is wanted.

Rotating proxies (from $14/mo): 700,000+ IPs behind fixed gateway IP:PORTs. New IP on every request, or every 3 or 15 minutes. USA, EU, USA+EU or Worldwide. Unlimited bandwidth on every plan.

Before you start

  1. Log in to the member area and copy your gateway IP:PORTs. They never change; the rotation happens on our side.
  2. Add the public IP of the computer or server that will run your tool under Authorized IPs, click Save, and allow up to 15 minutes before testing. Rotating and residential proxies use IP authentication, so there is no username or password.
  3. Dedicated proxies work with either IP authentication or a username and password. Use user:pass if your IP changes or the tool runs on several machines.
  4. Count your threads: the tool’s total open connections must stay within your plan (for example 40 threads on the 40-thread plan).

Set up Storm rotating proxies in ScrapeBox

  1. Authorize the computer or VPS that runs ScrapeBox

Rotating plans connect by IP authorization, so there is no username or password to enter in ScrapeBox. In the member area, add the public IP of the Windows PC or VPS where ScrapeBox runs under Authorized IPs, click Save, and give it up to 15 minutes.

  2. Copy your Main gateway IP:PORTs

Copy every Main gateway IP:PORT on your plan, one per line. The Main gateway gives a new IP on each connection, which is what search-engine harvesting needs. For harvesting, use the Worldwide location if you have it; it gives the widest spread of IPs for scraping. Don’t use the 3-minute gateway for search engines.

  3. Load them in the Proxy Manager

On the main window, click Manage in the proxies area to open the Proxy Manager, then choose Load from ClipBoard (or Append from ClipBoard to add to an existing list). Plain IP:PORT lines are all ScrapeBox needs. Close the manager without running a test.

  4. Tick Use Proxies

Back on the main window, make sure Use Proxies is checked next to the harvester engine settings. Without it ScrapeBox ignores the list and harvests from your own IP, which is the quickest way to get your office or home IP blocked.

  5. Set harvester connections and timeouts

Open Settings → Connections, Timeouts and Other Settings. Set the harvester connections for Google to at most 25% of your plan’s threads (10 on 40 threads, 20 on 80, 37 on 150, 50 on 200). Give connections a generous timeout so slow responses aren’t counted as failures, and keep a few proxy retries so a blocked query is sent again on a new connection.

  6. Check the proxy in a browser, then run a small harvest

Put one gateway into a browser’s proxy settings and open an IP-check page a few times; the IP should change on each visit. Then harvest a handful of keywords and watch the results grid fill. If both work, scale up.

Proxy list formats and example settings

Paste lists like these into the Proxy Manager. Use your own gateway IPs and ports from the member area. ScrapeBox treats each line as one proxy; with rotating gateways, each line is a doorway into the whole pool.

Why the ScrapeBox proxy test fails on our gateways

ScrapeBox’s Proxy Manager can test proxies for speed, anonymity and Google access, then filter or remove the ones that fail. That checker isn’t compatible with Storm rotating gateways. It may mark working gateways as failed or slow, and if you then use “remove failed” or filter by speed, you delete proxies that work perfectly in the harvester.

The proxies themselves work fine in ScrapeBox; only the checker doesn’t match how a gateway behaves. So:

  • Don’t run the Proxy Manager test on gateway lists, and don’t filter them by the test result.
  • If you enabled auto-removal of dead proxies during harvesting, turn it off for gateways. A failed query usually means one IP was rate-limited on that request, and the next connection through the same gateway goes out from a different IP.
  • Verify with a browser instead: set one gateway as the HTTP proxy in Firefox or Chrome, open an IP-check page, and refresh. A new IP on each visit means the gateway and your authorization are fine.

Harvester threads: why 25% for Google

A rotating plan’s thread count is the number of connections it accepts at the same moment. ScrapeBox lets you set hundreds of harvester connections, but Google reacts to how fast queries arrive, not just to how many IPs send them. Running the whole plan against Google floods it with queries, and the share that comes back as CAPTCHAs or empty pages climbs fast.

Keeping Google and other search engines to at most a quarter of your threads holds the query rate where most of them return results. In practice:

  • 40 threads: 10 harvester connections.
  • 80 threads: 20 connections.
  • 150 threads: 37 connections.
  • 200 threads: 50 connections.

Need results faster? Move up a plan rather than raising connections on the same one. Engines other than Google, and non-search tasks, can use more of the plan, as long as the total stays inside it. The Detailed Harvester also lets you add a delay between queries, which helps on long footprint runs.

Addons and other tools share the same threads

The plan’s limit applies to everything connecting through your gateways at once, from every program on every authorized machine. ScrapeBox addons such as the Alive Checker, Link Extractor, Page Authority and Google Meta Scraper, plus the built-in Keyword Scraper, each have their own connection settings, and they all draw from the same pool of threads.

  • Running the harvester and an addon together? Add their connection counts. A 10-connection harvest plus a 50-connection Alive Checker run is 60, which is over a 40-thread plan.
  • The Keyword Scraper pulls from search suggestion sources such as Google Suggest and Bing, so count it inside your 25% search-engine share.
  • A browser tab you open for checks uses around 10 threads while it loads.
  • Set each addon’s connections before starting it rather than leaving defaults, which are often far higher than a small plan allows.

Going over the limit doesn’t make the job faster. Extra connections fail, and ScrapeBox shows them as proxy errors, which then look like a broken proxy.

Main, 3-minute or 15-minute gateway?

  • Main (new IP per connection): search-engine harvesting, keyword scraping, link and index checks. This is the gateway for nearly all ScrapeBox work.
  • 15-minute: tasks that must keep one IP across several requests to the same site, such as stepping through pages of one domain.
  • 3-minute: meant for account registration, social sites and browsing, USA only. Not for search engines, so keep it out of your harvester list.

Locations work the same way: USA, EU or USA+EU for region-specific checks, and Worldwide for broad scraping. The gateway IP:PORTs are fixed, so once they’re in a saved ScrapeBox proxy file you never need to update the list; the rotation happens on our side.

Running ScrapeBox on a VPS

Many people run ScrapeBox around the clock on a Windows VPS. That works well with IP authorization: authorize the VPS IP, not the PC you connect from with Remote Desktop. If you run ScrapeBox on both, authorize both IPs and split the threads between them. If your home IP changes, authorize a free dynamic DNS hostname such as No-IP instead of a raw IP. For other SEO crawlers on the same plan, see the Screaming Frog guide.

Common errors and fixes

FAQ

Why does the ScrapeBox proxy checker say my Storm proxies are dead?

ScrapeBox’s built-in proxy checker is not compatible with our gateways. The proxies still work in the harvester and addons. Test a gateway in a browser instead, and don’t remove gateways based on the checker’s result.

How many harvester connections should I use on a Storm 40-thread plan?

Ten for Google and other search engines (25% of your threads). Other ScrapeBox tasks can use the rest, as long as everything running at the same time adds up to 40 or less.

Do I enter a username and password in ScrapeBox for rotating proxies?

No. Rotating proxies use IP authorization, so you load plain IP:PORT lines. Only private dedicated proxies with user:pass use the IP:PORT:USERNAME:PASSWORD format.

How many proxies do I need for ScrapeBox?

With a proxy list, people count IPs. With a rotating gateway, count threads: every connection gets a new IP from the pool, so a few gateway ports cover hundreds of thousands of IPs. Choose the plan by how many connections you run at once.

Are rotating or dedicated proxies better for ScrapeBox?

For harvesting Google and other engines, rotating proxies on the Main gateway. Dedicated proxies are static IPs that get rate-limited on search engines once you push volume through them; use them for lighter tasks where a fixed IP is wanted.

Does ScrapeBox use a lot of bandwidth?

Big harvests and alive checks move a lot of data, but on Storm plans bandwidth is unlimited, so you pay for threads, not gigabytes.
